SKOWHEGAN, Maine — The Skowhegan Free Public Library recently received a $15,400 grant from the Belvedere Historical Preservation Fund of the Maine Community Foundation to support Project 2012 to restore and renovate the historical library building. Located in the center of town on Elm Street, the library is listed on the National Registry of Historic Buildings.
Originally designed in 1889, the structure is one of a number of buildings still found in towns along the Kennebec River attributed to Gardiner architect Edwin E. Lewis.
The Library Trustees have launched a campaign to restore the building and to make the needed renovations that will meet ADA compliance and safety and fire code state and federal guidelines. For more information, call Dale Jandreau at 474 9072 or visit http://www.skowhegan.lib.me.us .
