Seven-Year Old Organizes Event to Benefit Children with Life-threatening Illnesses

Northeast Harbor -

NORTHEAST HARBOR – Gabrielle Merchant, a seven-year-old from Trenton, Maine, recently formed a club with her friends dedicated to doing good. She quickly decided that she wanted to focus on helping kids her own age who were living with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses. With assistance from her mother, Theresa Merchant, Gabrielle decided to raise money for Camp Sunshine, a one-of-a-kind national retreat in Casco, Maine, for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.

Gabrielle started out working with her grandmother to hold bake sales and sell fresh produce, with help from local stores, farmers markets and her cousins. During one of her bake sales, neighbor Alan Drew, a magician, stopped by and offered to perform his show pro bono as a fundraiser for the camp. The Neighborhood House at 1 Kimball Road in Northeast Harbor donated its facility for the performance, which will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26.  Donations will be collected, and Gabrielle hopes to raise $1,500 — enough to send one family to Camp Sunshine for a week.
