BANGOR – Local seniors will hold a plant and garden inspired sale from noon-6 p.m., Friday, June 4, and 8 a.m. until sold out on Saturday, June 5, in the back parking lot and walkout basement of the Hammond Street Senior Center, located at 2 Hammond Street, Bangor, behind the Grasshopper Shop and the along the Kenduskeag Stream. The sale is rain or shine.

Organizers are quick to point out that theirs’ won’t be the usual run-of-the mill plant sale. The two-day “Still Growing” Plant and Garden-Inspired Sale will, of course, have the staples of day lilies, irises, hostas and other perennials. There are dozens upon dozens of houseplants and indoor trees that have been rooted and potted for the sale, too. But, it wouldn’t be a Hammond Street Senior Center event without beautiful and unique handmade pottery, paintings and crafts made by members. Among the garden-inspired items for sale is a lovely set of two Adirondack chairs and a table handmade by a member.

New to the sale this year is the addition of terrariums and fairy forests. Members have spent weeks creating mini biospheres of all shapes and sizes in beautiful clear glass containers complete with custom cut glass lids with handles. The biospheres contain layers of activated carbon and purified rocks for self-filtering and native Maine mosses and fauna gathered from local woods. Some of the biospheres feature little figurines and the addition of organic herbs, which instantly transform a cool terrarium habitat into a fairy forest.

“The terrariums and fairy forests are all self-contained and low-maintenance, barely ever needing to be watered because the balanced biosphere produces its own misty rain,” explained Senior Center member and plant sale volunteer Joan Macchi. “They are a perfect way to bring a little bit of the garden into any home for plant lovers of any age. We’ve made so many in such interesting containers. They would work in a child’s bedroom, on the windowsill in a small apartment or as a unique centerpiece on a dining room table.”

The terrariums and fairy forests can be purchased any weekday at the Senior Center. For more information and photographs, visit www.hammondstreet.org.
