Bar Harbor -

Steve Richards of Mount Desert Island was recently elected Chair of the YMCA Alliance of Maine

PORTLAND – Representatives of the 17 YMCAs in Maine unanimously elected Steve Richards as Chair of the YMCA Alliance of Maine at is annual meeting in Portland on November 5. Richards has served as Vice Chair of the Alliance for the past four years. Richards has led the strategic planning efforts of the Alliance in creating their strategic plans including the most recent plan which was adopted at the annual meeting.

Richards has been involved in the Mount Desert Island YMCA since 2003 when he was first elected to its board of directors. He served as its board chair for three years and, after rotating off the board of directors, was elected to its board of trustees. He was elected to the YMCA National Assembly in Chicago as a representative of the nine state Northeast Region in 2008 and was a delegate to the YMCA General Assembly in Salt Lake City in 2010.

The 17 YMCAs in Maine have a collective budget of over $40 million and serve over 100,000 people in diverse communities throughout the state. Maine YMCAs provide almost $5 million in financial assistance and subsidies for children, youth, and families. Almost 3,500 volunteers support the work of the YMCAs in Maine. YMCAs also received over $2 million in government funding through grants, contracts, and vouchers to provide front-line services that relieved the burden of government to provide many of these services. Maine YMCAs have also created key partnerships with many different organizations such as primary and secondary schools, colleges, churches, and various government agencies at the local, state, and federal levels.

The YMCA recently went through a re-branding process which focuses on the vital services that are provided by the YMCA in thousands of communities across the United States in three key areas – youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

The MDI YMCA has been serving the island community of Mount Desert Island for well over one hundred years. The Y currently features a preschool, thriving swim team, summer camp programs and various adult and youth fitness programs.
