“Out in the Silence” showing supports high school GSA’s

Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Schhodic Peninsula -

ELLSWORTH, Maine — Reel Pizza in Bar Harbor will be the venue for a screening of Out in the Silence, a multiple – award winning documentary about the struggle of a gay teen and his mother against a school that determinedly looks the other way when he is brutally attacked for coming out in his small high school. CJ’s story is documented by Joe Wilson, who once lived in the same town, and Dean Hamer, who have their own struggle to face after announcing their wedding in DC in the hometown newspaper. The Sunday, October 23 showing is sponsored by the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) as a fundraiser for Northern Maine high school Gay-Straight Alliances. A student art show, student voice performances, raffle and discussion will be included in the 1 to 4 pm event. Tickets are available at the door; $10 for adults and $2 for students.
Out in the Silence, produced in association with the Sundance Institute, explores topics ranging from religion, safe schools and economic development to discrimination, tolerance and understanding. The film documents how hate and repression of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people continue to harm and divide communities;. It also offers a model for bridging that division amongst people of all ages, especially those in small towns and rural communities where there is little organized gay presence. There have been over 300 showings of Out in the Silence throughout the country, most in small rural communities, aimed at starting the conversation about inclusion, fairness, and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in those places. The American Library Association recommends Out in the Silence for all viewers, saying it “ …deserves a place in all library collections, particularly those libraries serving small and rural communities.”
