ORONO – The Orono High School chapter of the National Honor Society recently donated 88 teddy bears to the Orono Police Department’s Hug-a-Bear program. The National Honor Society members conducted a successful teddy bear drive during Homecoming Week where over forty bears were donated by the OHS student body. Members also collected donations at football games and sold flower bulbs to purchase additional bears. Rachel Balaban, OHS senior, said “teddy bears are a inventive way to comfort children because a teddy bear can be just the ticket sometimes.”

The Hug-a-Bear program provides a teddy bear for children who need a special friend to hug. The bears are distributed, by the Orono Police Department, for all sorts of occasions where a huggable friend would help: fires, domestic situations, accidents, medical and health emergencies, or just because a child needs a soft and cuddly friend.
