NEWPORT – Anna Sunlight and the North Country Inter Tribal Pow-wow committee will be hosting this year’s Inter Tribal Pow-wow on Saturday, September 4th, Sunday, September 5th and Monday September 6th, at 934 Elm Street Newport (Rt2/100)
The Pow-wow starts Saturday morning when the gate opens at 10AM.
Several activities will be held each day for the adults and children.
Activities start at 10:30AM with Dail “Dragonfly” Martin, she will dazzle the public with her flute playing and singing. At 11:00AM there will be storytelling by Robert “Kunnaway” Turner.
At 12:00 noon Grand Entry will begin with Natives parading in their regalia. During Grand Entry the drums will sing and play the Grand Entry song then the Flag song, and least but not last the Veteran’s song. At 12:30PM Inter Tribal dancing begins.
1:00PM Tomahawk Throwing tournament, for those wanting to enter the Tomahawk Throwing tournament it is open to everyone 16 years and older. A small entrance fee of $1.00 for 3 throws there will be prizes. At 2:30PM the world renowned storyteller Donna Augustine will be sharing her Mi’k Maq family stories.
Inter tribal dancing will resume at 3:00PM.
At 4:30PM we will have the daily give a ways. At 4:45PM will be closing ceremonies for the day.
This year, Saturday and Sunday from 7:00PM to 9:00PM the gate will reopen, we will be having a FREE concert featuring Timbered Lake on Saturday. Sunday there will be night dancing. Both events are open to the public and FREE. This year’s Emcee is James Augustine from New Brunswick, Canada. This year’s featured drums are Sacred Spirits Drum, Mountain Spirit Singers, Indian Bay Singers, Red Hawk Medicine Drum, Wind & Stone, Lone Wolf Singers and Two Feathers Drum.
Admission to the Pow-wow: $5.00 per adult/per day Children under 18 is free with a paid adult. Elders $3.00 per day. Limited camping is free with paid daily admission, no hook ups. Free parking and valet parking for the elders and person’s with disablilities. No drugs or alcohol allowed on the grounds. To volunteer or more information please email us ncountrypowwow1@yahoo.com.
