MOUNT DESERT – MDI High School Drama will¬† host the Eastern Regional of the Maine Drama Festival on March 11-12 in the Higgins-Demas Theater. The two-day festival will feature nine one-act performances by schools from Hancock, Washington, Waldo, Penobscot and Kennebec counties.
The regional festival, which has been hosted by MDI Drama for thirteen of the last fifteen years, features nine school hoping to reach the state finals in two classes based on school size. Drama festival rules dictate that each show must work within strict guidelines that limit show length (40 minutes) and setup and strike times (five minutes each). Schools that exceed these strictures, even by one second, will be disqualified from the competition and may not move on to states; however, they may still earn individual and ensemble honors.
A local performance of Children of Drancy is slated for 7 p.m. Saturday, March 5¬† in the Higgins-Demas Theater.¬† The evening’s opening session of the Drama Fest will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, March 4 and feature performances by George Stevens Academy, Washington Academy and festival host Mount Desert Island High School. The Saturday afternoon session is scheduled to begin at noon and will feature Belfast Area High School, Orono High School and Old Town High School.
The Festival wraps up 6 p.m. Saturday night with performances by Brewer High School, Erskine Academy and Lee Academy.
Regional drama festival tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for students and may only be purchased at the door.
