FRENCHBOROÂ – Maine Coast Heritage Trust is proud to offer a series of nine guided outings to their Frenchboro and Marshall Island preserves. The hikes are open to anyone and everyone and are free (there is a boat/transportation fee for both destinations). There is no better way to experience the beauty of these rugged islands than taking a hike with local stewards who know the trails, natural and human histories, and special nooks and crannies of these fantastic coastal preserves.
The Frenchboro outings start with an enjoyable 45-minute early morning ferry ride packed with harbor porpoise, seals and other sea life. Once docked in Frenchboro we’ll take a 6-8 mile hike within MCHT’s 970-acre Frenchboro Preserve on trails that weave through maritime forests and along rocky shorelines. Bold coastal cliffs and rocky headlands offer great views of Mount Desert Island, its off-shore islands and the open ocean. There will be plenty of time for personal exploration of the protected property and the village around Lunt Harbor, with its history museum and dockside restaurant. Four trips to the Frenchboro preserve are being offered this summer – July 23rd, August 20th and September 3rd (all Fridays). These are full day trips, (8am – 7pm) starting at the “Swan’s Island Ferry Terminal” in Bass Harbor. Please be on time, the passenger-only ferry leaves promptly at 8am!
There will also be 5 MCHT trips out to Marshall Island, a 981-acre gem of an island! Protected in 2003 with help from the Land for Maine’s Future Program, Marshall is the largest undeveloped, uninhabited island on the east coast. Following a cruise through scenic Merchant Row, join MCHT staff as they take you on a 6-8 mile hike thru lush maritime forests to ocean views, tide pools and picturesque sandy beaches. Marshall Island has a rugged feeling that gives you a different sense of the Maine coast. There are five Marshall Island trips being offered this summer: July 21st, August 4th and 18th, and September 1st. These are full-day trips (8:30am – 4:30pm) and reservations are required. Contact Stonington-based Old Quarry Ocean Adventures Inc. at 207-367-8977 or info@OldQuarry.com to reserve a spot on these trips and receive directions.
All Frenchboro and Marshall Island trips will be lead by steward and naturalist Terry Towne, and on several of the trips he will be joined by other MCHT staff. MCHT is a conservation organization dedicated to protecting the character of Maine for future generations.
