SKOWHEGAN â Giffordâs Ice Cream (www.giffordsicecream.com), Maineâs award-winning, family-owned and -operated ice cream company, has signed on as the official ice cream of the second annual Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen (www.dempseychallenge.org), to benefit the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston, Maine. This year, the Giffordâs team will be greatly expanding its level of participation, event officials announced today, by participating in both days of the Oct 2-3 event; introducing a new Giffordâs flavor for the Challenge; and donating proceeds from ice cream sales during the event.
âLast yearâs Dempsey Challenge was a remarkable event. It had such a profound impact on the community and on so many cancer patients treated at the Dempsey Center,â said Lindsay Gifford, vice president of sales and marketing for Giffordâs Ice Cream. âIt means a lot to our whole team to play an even bigger role in the 2010 Challenge. Weâre especially looking forward to introducing our new, special Dempsey Challenge flavor, âPedal Passion Caramel Crunch,â at this yearâs event.â
The new, signature flavor will premier at the Festival in the Park on Saturday, and Giffordâs will donate $1 from every scoop of âPedal Passion Caramel Crunchâ or Giffordâs award-winning chocolate and vanilla flavors sold to the spectators and fans who visit the Festival area throughout the event, while supplies last. Giffordâs Ice Cream also will treat event participants to a cooling cone after the cycling events on Sunday. The new initiatives will effectively double the companyâs commitment to the event.
âThe participation of local companies such as Giffordâs Ice Cream gives the Dempsey Challenge the hometown flavor that Patrick Dempsey was hoping for when he created this event,â said Wendy Tardif, Dempsey Challenge event manger. âThe continued support of these influential businesses reminds us all of The Centerâs importance to this community, and we are so pleased to have Giffordâs on board in an even bigger way this year.â
Established by actor and Lewiston, Maine, native Patrick Dempsey, The Dempsey Challenge has been expanded to a two-day format this year, featuring a Kidâs Fun Run and 5 and 10K runs/walks on Saturday. The official Dempsey Challenge cycling events will be held on Sunday, October 3, featuring cycling routes of 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles.
The free, weekend-long Festival in the Park also is a highlight of the event. In addition to an array of vendors and family-friendly activities, such as a KidZone, live music, entertainment and an art workshop, the Festival will focus on wellness with a health expo, information about cancer prevention and early detection, health screenings and the Amgen Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk. The activities throughout the weekend will be held at Simard-Payne Police Memorial Park in Lewiston.
The inaugural Dempsey Challenge in 2009 drew thousands of participants, spectators and professional cyclists, who all came together in support of the Dempsey Center. Founded in March 2008, The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center provides high-quality education, support and wellness services at no cost to cancer patients and their caregivers. In 2009, the Center had over 7,000 direct patient contacts and served over 2,000 on its toll-free cancer helpline. More information can be found at www.dempseycenter.org.
