ELLSWORTH -  Schools from RSU #24 will be joining schools from around the state to celebrate Maine Walk and Bike to School Week. Students from the Ellsworth Elementary School, Peninsula School, and Mt. View School will walk to school at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 18. Approximately 1000 students from local schools will be walking to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders.
Students in Ellsworth will either join a walking school bus in the Argonne and Davis Street neighborhoods or be dropped off the school bus at remote location and walk to school. Students, teachers, parents, and community leaders will walk with the students. The Ellsworth Police Department will provide crossing guards.
Peninsula School students will get off the bus approximately ¬Ĺ mile before they reach the school and walk the remainder of the way.
Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.
The event is being organized as part of the Coordinated School Health
Program and a step towards planning safe routes to school infrastructure.
