MOUNT DESERT -The Downeast Dog Scouts are seeking donations for a Yard Sale to be held Saturday, June 5, 2010 from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm at the Somesville Fire Station. Items will be accepted on Friday, June 4, 2010 from 12:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the Somesville Fire Station. The Someville Fire Station is located on the corner of Route 102 and Pretty Marsh Road in Mount Desert. In addition, old ink cartridges and cell phones will be collected for recycling.
All proceeds from the Yard Sale will go towards the Downeast Dog Scouts Community Service Projects and Community Education Programs. The Downeast Dog Scouts bring people and dogs together to learn, socialize and help in the community.
Downeast Dog Scouts members and their dogs provide therapy dog visits throughout Hancock County. The group supports and participates in literacy and Children Reading to Dogs Programs in schools and libraries. Troop community service and education activities have been: Pet Recovery Oxygen Mask Donation Project, Island Dog Creative Writing Project, Canine Carnival and community clean ups. In 2009, members provided a total of 1,230 hours of community service.
Established in 2007, Downeast Dog Scouts Troop 159 is a local sub-group of the Dog Scouts of America (www.dogscouts.org), a national non-profit organization dedicated to educating people about responsible dog ownership and promoting a positive human-canine bond.
