Winifred Collins book “Pushaw Lake-An Historical Profile” has recently been released. Collins is a native of Bangor Maine now living in New Jersey. She has spent almost every summer of her 85 years at Gould’s Landing Pushaw Lake.
Collins became fascinated with Pushaw history through working with the History Committee of the Greater Pushaw History Association beginning in the mid 1980′s. In 2005 it became clear that no one on the committee was willing to take on the job of author. Fearful that all the material that had been collected would be lost she decided to compile the book.
It covers the early 19th Century through the early 20th Century. It traces the rise and fall of the famous resorts, such as the Lakeview Hotel, Newcomb’s Landing, the Niben Club and others. Through notes from the Whig and Courier it shows the close ties between Bangor residents and the lake. It covers the good times as well as the tragedies.
It has appeal for camp owners, past camp owners, anyone who has an interest in local history, and all those who love the lake.
