AUGUSTA - – Maine Down Syndrome Network is hosting Maine’s 10th Annual Buddy Walk at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26 at Payson Park in Portland, and at Capitol Park in Augusta. The Buddy Walk was created by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. The Buddy Walk has grown from 17 walks in 1995 to nearly 300 walks planned for 2010 worldwide. In 2009, more than $9.5 million was raised nationwide to benefit local programs and services, as well as the national advocacy initiatives of NDSS that benefit all individuals with Down syndrome. More information about all of these programs can be found at MDSN’s website, www.dsmaine.org.
Those interested in walking, or in supporting our walkers may do so by visiting, www.dsmaine.org. You may also register the day of the walk at either park, beginning at 12:00pm.
