BANGOR, Maine — The latest series of Bangor Area Adventure Girls will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15. Three other adventures will occur on Nov. 12, Dec. 10 and Jan. 28.

An interactive program developed by Hardy Girls Healthy Women for girls in grades 2-6, Adventure Girls gives girls the opportunity to meet once a month with women who are defying gender stereotypes and challenging notions of what a girl or woman ‚Äúshould‚ÄĚ do or be. Adventure Girls brings girls together with college mentors and women facilitators to learn how mountaineers, race car drivers, boat captains, and other daring women chose to do what they do and how they’ve found the courage to follow their dreams.

On Oct.15, the girls will meet air traffic controller, Teddi-Jann Covell, take a tour the control tower and other related facilities, and learn how she and her colleagues control the movements of aircraft in the area and keeps them at safe distances from one
another.  The event will be held at the FAA Control Tower off Fuller Road in Bangor.

On Nov. 12, girls will have the opportunity to help write a script, produce, and record a public service announcement at the New England School on the Husson University Campus in Bangor.  They will meet instructors and students in broadcasting fields and learn about
becoming an on-air announcer, news anchors, station manager, and more.

On Dec. 10, Holly Lounder, a black belt instructor, will give a Taekwondo demonstration and teach girls some basic moves.  They will learn about women in martial arts, self
defense, and much more.  The event will be held at Memorial Gym, in the All Purpose Room at the University of Maine in Orono.

On Jan. 28, girls will meet the University of Maine Women’s Ice Hockey team and learn about what it takes to be a Black Bear, take a tour of the Alfond Arena, and they can bring skates for an on-ice skill session with the team. This event will be held at the Alfond
Arena, University of Maine, Orono

These four adventures are made possible by a grant from the Rotary Club of Bangor.  Parents are asked to pay $15 per event or $50 for four.  Scholarships are also available.
