MACHIAS – The University of Maine at Machias will host Paper and Book Intensive 2010, an annual working sabbatical for practitioners and beginners in the book arts, papermaking and conservation.
Now in its 27th year, PBI will be held on the UMM campus July 11–22 and will feature high-end classes in bookbinding, letterpress, papermaking, and related book art. More then 70 paper and book enthusiasts are expected to take part in the 12-day program.
Daily class sessions will be combined with lectures and discussions to promote unusual levels of exchange and inspiration among the artists. Book and papermaking experts from around the country will lead the workshops, covering a wide-range of topics from paper sculpture to techniques in letterpress printing.
This is the first time that UMM has hosted the Paper and Book Intensive. The Machias campus houses a book arts studio, directed by papermaker and art professor Bernie Vinzani, that is equipped with two Vandercook presses, a C&P Old Style Press, and etching and lithography presses. UMM also offers degree programs in English and book arts and interdisciplinary fine arts with a concentration in book arts. For more information about PBI 2010, visit www.paperbookintensive.org.
