Community building Workshops

Belfast and Lincolnville -

BELFAST, Maine — The Friends of Midcoast Maine, the Orton Family Foundation, and The Project for Public Spaces are jointly offering two innovative, cutting edge workshops that look at the combination of place-making, code development, public engagement and new partnerships to set the stage for policy changes and building better communities.

‚ÄúTools for Building Community – From Place Making to Policy Changes through Public Engagement and New Partnerships‚ÄĚ will include a diverse menu of new tools for public engagement, place-making and policy changes including form based codes.

Many planning initiatives either never get implemented or lead to erosion of local identity. How can focusing on placemaking facilitate implementation of plans and policy that reinforce and build strong, vibrant communities? How do we move from understanding that ‚Äúplace is important‚ÄĚ to implementing policy changes that build strong, vibrant communities?

On Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Lincolnville Center and Wednesday, Oct. 12, in downtown Belfast, participants will take part in classroom, field work and community exercises to learn new tools for community building. These free hands-on dynamic workshops include walking and outdoor field exercises. Comfortable walking shoes and appropriate outdoor wear are recommended. Lunch is included. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the workshops will conclude by 3 p.m.

The workshops are designed for planners, lay persons, downtown businesses and downtown organizations, chambers of commerce representatives, developers, property owners, realtors, planning students, designers, landscapers, historic preservationists and many others.

Friends of Midcoast Maine assists communities with planning, public engagement and community building to build stronger, more vibrant, healthy communities. Visit www.friendsmidcoast.org/register.htm for on-line registration or call 236-1077 for more information.
