SANFORD -  Construction has begun on an apartment building in Lewiston that will provide permanent housing to families who are now homeless. It is the first such project to be built specifically for that purpose in Lewiston.

TPD Construction recently signed an agreement to build the 10-unit, three-story structure at 114 Blake Street for Tedford Housing, and began laying the foundation this week. Families now living in temporary shelters, automobiles and outdoor locations will move into the building early next year.

“We are getting as many units as we can onto the lot because this is badly needed housing,” said Donald Kniseley, executive director of Tedford Housing, a Brunswick-based organization dedicated to eliminating homelessness. “This building is going to be a tremendous community resource.”

Tedford chose TPD Construction for the work both because it offered a good value and because Tedford knew from previous work with the builder that the company does good work and could work with a challenging site such as this one. The site is in an existing neighborhood, and was chosen for its proximity to schools, churches, stores and other services, said Steven Normand, owner of Steve Normand Architects in Topsham.

“It’s an extremely tight site and the work has to be coordinated carefully, with subcontractors and materials scheduled to arrive just when they are needed,” said Greg Dumont, job superintendent for TPD Construction on the Tedford project.

The project is a real collaboration, Kniseley said, with financing awarded by MaineHousing, Lewiston-Auburn CDBG program, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston , Androscoggin Bank and TD Bank.

“TPD Construction appreciates the opportunity to work with a team like this one to help build something that the community really needs,” said Tom Dumont, company president. “We oversee construction projects around the country, but it means that much more to help our neighbors here in Maine turn their dreams into reality.”

TPD Construction is leading general contractor and design-build partner for project owners and has worked on major projects in more than a dozen states. TPD can be reached at (207) 490-5900, www.tpdconstruction.com or info@tpdconstruction.com
