Doug Springer of Ellsworth, the owner of Springers Gymnastics Center, a center for artistic gymnastics instruction to the youth of Hancock County, was recently named the 2010 Achievement Award recipient by the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE).
Springers Gymnastics Center is dedicated to the instruction of gymnastics to the youth of Hancock County and its surrounding communities. Celebrating its fifth anniversary, Springers Gymnastics has seen its popularity grow from 50 students at opening to over 300 students. Springers Gymnastics instructs both boys and girls, and last year received a grant in the amount of $4,193.00 from the NASE, which was used to purchase equipment specifically for its boys’ program. Men’s and women’s gymnasts are very different and require distinct apparatus. The men compete in six events: Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Still Rings, Vault, Parallel Bars and Horizontal Bar.
“After receiving the grant last year, we purchased some equipment specifically for our younger boys and our competitive team. We saw an increase in our enrollment this past year, and have a lot of young boys in the gym,” said Doug Springer, owner and head coach at Springers Gymnastics Center. “We also saw a lot of success for out competitive team. In only our third year of competition, we saw our Level 4 and Level 5 teams finish as State Runners Up. We also had one of our Level 5 gymnasts, Kyle Adams, qualify for the Region 6 Championships. I have no doubt that the increased enrollment and continued success of our boys’ team was influenced by the grant we received last year.”
The NASE Business Development Grant Program offers access to capital for micro-business owners who have a specific business need – but lack the finances to carry out that goal. Since the program began in 2006, the association has awarded over $400,000 to member businesses.
“In the true spirit of entrepreneurship, NASE Members who receive a grant do tremendous things with such a relatively small amount of money,” said NASE President Robert Hughes. “We developed the Achievement Award as a way to recognize those that took their grant and made a huge impact on their business, their community, and their bottom line.”
The NASE has only given three previous Achievement Awards, so it is a true honor to be recognized. “We understood when we applied for the grant that we would undergo some sort of critical process to determine the merit of our request, but to be recognized because of our hard work and the way we used the funds to help our business is truly a shock, but also a huge honor.” said Springer. “I cannot express how much this award means to our business, and how honored we are to accept it.”
The National Association for the Self-Employed is the nation’s leading resource for the self-employed and micro-businesses, bringing a broad range of benefits to help entrepreneurs succeed and to drive the continued growth of this vital segment of the American economy.
