EAST MACHIAS, Maine — A calendar for 2012 featuring photographs of remarkable historic houses now is available from the East Machias Historical Society.
Many beautiful houses grace the riverside, surrounding hills, and adjacent lakes of the Town of East Machias. Some have survived from the nineteenth century; a few even date to the eighteenth. Others, more recent, also contribute to the charm of the community. The 2012 calendar honors more than a dozen structures that have been home to town residents, present and past.
Photographs in the calendar come from the society’s own collections and from the private collection of Christine Small, a long-time officer and member of the society. Some of the homes pictured have disappeared into history, but others may still be seen standing along East Machias streets.
Since the year 2000, the society has annually published calendars containing historical photographs. These have focused on many subjects including fashions, military veterans, railroad travel, schools, bridges, and businesses. Photographs in some calendars have depicted miscellanies of subjects. Complete collections of these historical photograph calendars are available for sale as well as the new 2012 calendar.
Calendars may be purchased at Archibald’s One-Stop, Berry Vines gift shop, and the East Machias Town Office, or by contacting EMHS President Tom Gaddis at (207) 263-4354, or by writing to the East Machias Historical Society at P.O. Box 364, East Machias, ME 04630.
