Maine’s OBC Law

Maine -

STATEWIDE, Maine — The State of Maine enacted a law in January 2009 that allowed adult adoptees the right to their Original Birth Certificates. Back in 1953, Maine’s law stated that Original Birth Certificates, which has the birth parent(s) names, is one that is sealed upon adoption.

Since Maine’s law was passed, approximately 1000 people have requested Original Birth Certificates from the Maine Vital Records office in Augusta. Many have requested their Original Birth Certificates just to have a copy. Others have gone on to search for birth parents. Many have had incredible reunions, some have had frustrating dead ends. Not all have been wonderful stories. However, all will say they are grateful to have the information that the Original Birth Certificate gave to them.

If there are any adult adoptees in Maine looking to gain access to their Original Birth Certificate, please visit Maine Vital Records for downloadable forms: http://www.maine.gov/dhhs/boh/phs/odrvs/vital-records/index.shtml
or by contacting Tammy Marks, Maine Vital Records EDRS System Administrator at (207) 287-3181 or toll Free: 1-888-664-9491.
