MILFORD - Insurance Professionals of Eastern Maine (IPEM), an affiliate with the National Association of Insurance Women (NAIW) has named Sonia Bourgoin as 2010 Rookie of the Year. Bourgoin serves as a project manager and marketing representative for Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling of Central Maine since 2006. The Rookie Award was presented on May 13 during the IPEM’s annual All Industry Night at the Sheraton Hotel in Bangor, Maine. Each year, the award is presented to a new member who has joined the organization within the last two years. The recipient is selected by a majority vote of IPEM members for the award winner’s dedication and involvement in the organization’s activities.
Specifically, Bourgoin won the honor because of her involvement with several projects and her volunteer service on committees along with her attendance at IPEM and NAIW state and regional conventions. Bourgoin was also reviewed for the award based on her involvement in Paul Davis Restoration’s community service activities while heading up support for the Special Olympics and donating turkeys to local fire departments and families in need during Thanksgiving. She was also chosen because of her recent designation as the Project Coordinator of the Year at Paul Davis Restoration, and hosting continuing education credit courses at her office. Bourgoin was honored for the award among her peers including IPEM members, insurance agents and insurance industry affiliate members such as adjusters and corporate sponsors
Bourgoin began her working career in the food service industry in 1990 at the age of 16. In 1992, she was employed at a nursing home in the laundry and housekeeping departments. During this time, she attended the University of Maine at Fort Kent where she majored in education and worked part time in the university’s cafeteria. In 1994, Bourgoin was married and moved to Alaska where she worked in food service. At the age of 22, she moved to Texas and worked for a franchise restaurant as a waitress, bartender and head hostess. The restaurant manager at the time saw potential in her and started training Bourgoin as the floor manager. In less than a year, she studied to become a mobile trainer with the company and later became certified with the company to open store locations. In 1998, she was recommended for further training and professional development, however she declined due to her decision to move to Maine.
By 2001 at the age of 27, Bourgoin was managing a restaurant where she was employed for five years. During this time, Bourgoin met her current employer, Keith Trembley with Paul Davis Restoration. Trembley recommended Bourgoin for a project coordinator position and she accepted the job. Bourgoin then became involved in the local IPEM and NAIW and became an affiliate member. Bourgoin believes that her everything she has accomplished in her professional life has been self taught and that her success is based on a belief to provide exceptional customer service. She also believes that people need to be listened to, heard and made to feel like they matter. Bourgoin lives by the Golden Rule.
