SCARBOROUGH — Hannaford Helps Schools, which has raised more than $6.2 million to support education initiatives during the past decade, will kick off its 11th year on Sunday, Sept. 5.
Open to grades K–12, the program allows shoppers to raise money for activities and equipment — such as computers, sports gear and playground items — by simply buying eligible products between Sept. 5 and Dec. 5. For every four participating products purchased, customers receive three “school dollars” that are equivalent to cash and can be turned in to the school or placed in special collection bins at any Hannaford store.
“Schools are an invaluable part of the communities we serve, and we know that it gets tougher every year to provide the programs and services that children need,” said Elizabeth Boulos, marketing specialist for Hannaford Supermarkets. “We’re proud to give shoppers an easy way to improve education where they live and equally proud to reinforce their efforts as an organization.”
Hannaford has received strong commitments from 23 brand partners this year, making more than 900 products eligible for school dollars. Goods from Hannaford Brand, Bayer, Bush’s Beans, Clorox, Coca-Cola, Farm Rich, General Mills, Gorton’s, Heinz FF, Hershey, Kellogg, King Arthur, Knouse, McCains, Mott’s, Nestle Beverage, New World, Ocean Spray, Purina, Simply Asian, Tyson, Welch’s and White Wave will benefit more than 2,700 schools in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.
“The participating products are items that many shoppers buy every week, making it easy to generate additional funding for their schools,” said Boulos. “We’re also making a special effort to include foods that receive 1, 2 or 3 Guiding Stars for their nutritional qualities. The health of our schools and our customers are important to maintaining a strong community.”
In 2009, the program raised nearly $645,000, including $452,474 from in-store collections. Hannaford donates an additional $1,000 to the top-earning school aligned with each store.
Schools wishing to join the program or participating schools with questions should contact the store manager at their local Hannaford Supermarket or call the Hannaford Helps Schools hotline at (800) 205-7839.
