Gerald George of East Machias Named Maine Senior College Network Poet Laureate

East Machias -

PORTLAND – Gerald George of East Machias has been named the Maine Senior College Poet Laureate by the Maine Senior College Network. He was honored for his poem, “Hymn to Hope and Jolly Liberation,” selected as the winning entry by judges Tamrah Smith and Jonathan Wilson, poetry editors of Words and Images, the annual journal of the literary and visual arts published by the University of Southern Maine.

George attends Sunrise Senior College at the University of Maine at Machias, where he has enjoyed classes in poetry and Shakespeare. He received his award at the recent Maine Senior College Network Conference at Point Lookout in Northport.

The Maine Senior College Network (MSCN) began in 1997 and is currently a consortium of 17 independent senior colleges located throughout Maine. Each senior college offers exciting, intellectually stimulating non-credit courses and special learning opportunities purely for the joy of learning for adults over the age of 50.
