Broadband Expansion Raises Issues for Individuals with Disabilities

Portland and statewide -

PORTLAND, Maine — On Thursday, August 25 and Friday August 26, The Maine Telecommunications Relay Services Advisory Council will sponsor a forum in Portland on the National Broadband Plan on Thursday-Friday, Aug. 25-26, at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in¬† Portland. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. The forum will look at how the Broadband Plan affects individuals with disabilities, particularly those who are deaf, hard of hearing or deaf-blind. The forum will bring together consumers, telecommunications experts, and government officials, including representatives of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the chairman of the Maine Public Utilities Commission.

The 12-member Advisory Council evaluates and contracts with telecommunications relay services providers in Maine. Consumers, representatives of the Public Utilities Commission, and telephone and cellular services are members of the Council.
