Blue Hill -

BLUE HILL – Each week, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust directors and employees, in exchange for being able to dress casually on Fridays, voluntarily contribute to a charitable fund that disburses gifts monthly to local non-profit organizations. This employee-driven donation program is called Community Commitment. The Bank matches the employee donations, doubling the amount given to the chosen non-profit organization. Each month employees at a different bank location get to choose the recipient of these contributions.

For the month of December, employees at the Bar Harbor Bank & Trust branch in Blue Hill chose the Dolly Fisher Fund at the First Congregational Church and the Deacon’s Fund at the First Baptist Church of Blue Hill to receive the Community Commitment funds.

The Dolly Fisher Fund, which is funded independently from the church, was established in 2008 to provide winter heating assistance for local residents, along with other needs. “The requests for heating assistance keep increasing. We had more requests this past December than we had the two previous Decembers. Just today we received two requests, one for oil and one for an electricity payment,” said Pastor Rob McCall. “Our local vendors have been great in providing fuel when needed,” said Charlie Ferden, Church treasurer and Fund manager. “It is amazing how many people are willing to help their neighbor.” Contributions to the Dolly Fisher Fund, can be made payable to First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 444, Blue Hill, ME 04614. Please write “Dolly Fisher Fund” in the memo line.

“Helping people who are struggling is a community effort,” said Rev. Steve Heneise, Pastor at the First Baptist Church in Blue Hill. “I was pleased that Bar Harbor Bank & Trust chose to make this gift, which will help our neighbors get through the winter.” The Deacon’s Fund at the First Baptist Church provides more than heating assistance. Although most requests in the winter months are for heating needs, the funds also help people year round with other necessities. All three churches in Blue Hill coordinate their community assistance efforts. Each church has a slightly different approach to administering their funds, which avoids duplication so that more people can be helped with available resources. The churches also work with the Washington-Hancock Community Agency, where they refer back and forth based on need and resources. Contributions to the Deacon’s Fund, can be made payable to First Baptist Church of Blue Hill, P.O. Box 836, Blue Hill, ME 04614. Please write “Deacon’s Fund” in the memo line.
